You’re making a difference!

Thank you for your past contributions and/or membership in AWARE.  Your financial support is vital to our work, not only to provide essential services, but also to offer opportunities for change on community and individual leels.  This year, given unprecedented national controversy surrounding the rights of victims of domestic and sexual assault, your membership in AWARE is more important than ever.  The conversationsthat we have in our homes are now resonating in our local goverment, legislative halls, and the Supreme Court.  Many of us feel a dangerous shift; we are being led to believe that domestic and sexual violence is a politicized, partisan issue.

It is simply not true.

Everyone knows the pain that results from domestic and sexual violence.  We experience it ourselves, see it in our families, witness it among friends, and suffer from it in work spaces.  We are triggered by survivor stories that have been bravely offered, perhaps as a warning, or perhaps in the hope of receiving some kind of justice or validation.  We are horrified by backlash that has blamed victims, denied harm, and excused violence with trite cliches or privileged arrogance.

This does not have to be our reality.  At AWARE, we change the world every day by working with survivors of domestic assault, sexual violence and child abuse.  The people we work with receive messages of validation, empathy and support as they struggle to make choices about their own experiences.  Should they share them?  Will anyone believe them?  Will it do any good?  Will the person who abused them be brought to justice?  It takes courage to ask these questions, and it takes courage to walk beside a survivor as we both work toward a safer world.  It takes courage to work with our community to address inequity and oppression.  AWARE staff and volunteers are changing our community.

Your membership to AWARE makes all of this possible. Our mission is not only to provide safe shelter and supportive services for survivors, but also to effect the social, political, and legal changes needed to eliminate oppression and gender based violence.  It’s your support that allows us to move our mission forward.  We ask you to select your own membership level, and if you’re able, to donate more generously this year.

We also invite you to support our work in other ways. Speak out when you hear someone trying to make gender based violence a partisan issue.  Volunteer to receive training and become an emergency responder at our hospital.  Show up for community events AWARE puts on around town.  Contact us for confidential support, 24/7, at 907-586-1090.  Know, and share with others, that you are not alone.

Sincerely yours,

Saralyn Tabachnick
