Groups at AWARE

We have a variety of groups at AWARE for women and children.  Please scroll down to see a list of all of our current groups.  For each of our groups:

  • All services are confidential and free of charge. 

  • Unless otherwise noted, women and children from the community are welcome to attend.

  • Childcare is provided.  Please call ahead (586-6623) if you are bringing your children. 

  • Transportation to and from the group may be available.  Please call ahead (586-6623) if you think you may need transportation.

Women's Education Groups

Our women's education groups are on Tuesdays, 6pm-8pm.  We have four topics within the education group

  • Domestic Violence:  Presentation on recognizing domestic violence, common myths about domestic violence, current statistics and more.

  • Sexual Assault:  This group examines the rates of sexual assault in our community, ways to stay safe, and the resources available for survivors of sexual assault.

  • Chemical Dependency:  Explores the relationship between substance abuse and domestic violence.  Presentation varies monthly.

  • Family Dynamics:  Discussion around healthy relationships, boundaries, self worth, and goal setting.  Presentation varies monthly.

Women's Support Groups

Our women's support groups are on Wednesdays, 6pm-8pm.  This is an opportunity for women who have experience domestic violence or sexual assault to share feelings, process feelings, give voice to current choices, and explore skills to design healthy living patterns.

Children's Life Skills Groups

The children's life skills groups are for children 7 and up.  They are Tuesdays, 6pm-8pm.  Groups include fun discussions, games and activities centered around different topics.  Topics include:

  • Personal Boundaries

  • Families and Change

  • Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution

  • Self Esteem

  • Naming and Expressing Feelings

  • Keeping it Safe at Home

  • Chemical Use and Abuse

Children's Creative Play

Children's creative play groups are for children 7 and up.  They are held Wednesdays, 6pm-8pm.  Groups include a variety of fun outings, movies, music, and games.

Healthy Relationships Class Series

AWARE advocates periodically facilitate a 10-week healthy relationships class for women.

The goals for this class are to:

¨ Explore and examine the elements of a healthy relationship.

¨ Develop techniques for boundary setting, assertiveness, realistic goal setting, and decision making.

¨ Increase understanding of abuse, abusive family dynamics, dysfunctional family patterns, feelings, with an emphasis on anger, fear and anxiety, guilt and grief.

¨ Receive support and encouragement while growing in self-knowledge and self-esteem, and in changing negative lifelong patterns.

Starts: July 27, 2010

Deadline to Register: July 27, 2010

Time: Tuesday Evenings, 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm

Location: Bartlett Regional Hospital, Admin Bldg, Room 203B

Mom's Parenting Support Group

This group is for women dealing with the unique parenting issues present in a domestic violence situation.  This group is currently open only to current AWARE residents and by referral only.
